The sinister melody sampled in Bill’s song has been driving me crazy, as it pops up in pop culture once in a while, but I couldn’t think of the name of the piece.

Hearing it again in the Pussycat Doghouse inspired me to flex my Google muscles once more, and (doggedly) search for the answer.

And lo! I finally found it: it’s “Pizzicatto Mysterioso,” which was written in 1914 to accompany silent films, usually to indicate a villain’s presence, or sneaking around in general.

That latter detail helps me understand why the melody appeared in Louis Armstrong’s “Zat You Santa Claus?” It was not an evil Santa, just a guy trying to be stealthy.

Notice that the Munster’s theme (that has made it into today’s bracket) lifts from this motif, by a factor of about 70%.

The Munsters Theme Song

Nice research, PoA.

Thanks! I didn’t know it was called “Pizzicatto Mysterioso.” I just knew it was that spooky theme everyone uses, and since the song is written from the point of view of a ghost, it made sense to use it. Good research!

Hey, one of yours: Eye of the Zombie – John Fogerty is still in the game!

Hey, you didn’t support your own song. “Rawhead and Bloodybones” felt that “Thriller” was a misrepresentation of zombies. Dead Can’t Dance. “Candlelight Song” agreed. They’re both rooting for “Lullaby”.

“I Want a New Drug” and “Candlelight Song” met for the first time at an undisclosed graveyard, each with their own gripe against “Ghostbusters”.

The challenge was to let everybody know I wasn’t serious without using emojis.

Hey love – could not get the link to work. Here are my choices to add to the tally.

On Our Own – Bobby Brown
Thriller– Michael Jackson
I Can’t Make You Anything (But Lonely) – Pussycat Doghouse
Ghostbusters – Ray Parker Jr.
Theme From Twin Peaks -Angelo Badalamenti
Lullaby – The Cure
Dead Man’s Party -Oingo Boingo
Monster Mash – Bobby “Boris” Pickett

Thriller over Fogerty was a toughie.

Alain Jourgensen of Ministry would probably rather you voted “Monster Mash.”
