I always make a strong effort to be your dependable and well-disciplined web-servant. That’s just one reason why I lovingly craft this pathetic bit at least a week in advance. That way, when Friday afternoon looms, clickety-click, easy-peasy: we’re published and ready to roll!
You are clearly writing this today, solely through the power of acetaminophen and miso soup.

Oh, yeah. I thought I’d fever dreamed that. Goodboy is correct. This is all on the fly, admittedly with an addled mind. In full candor, I’m running at about 35% of my normal energy level. Please excuse any weird, puzzling and extraneous free association that might creep into the paragraphs Beverly Hillbillies.
In all seriousness, here’s a quick story about last Saturday:
After 772 days and four reschedules, I was an honored guest of some old and dear friends who had planned their long anticipated wedding celebration. It had been postponed again and again, for the obvious reasons, but now it looked like it was finally happening.
Now, because your double-vaxxed and boosted correspondent is generally the cautious sort, I broke out the trusty Acme® homestyle COVID-19 test, just 30 minutes before I left to go to the wedding. The result: negatory, Pig Pen. So, yay! We’re good to go.
It was a quiet, yet festive affair. And we all had great fun experiencing, “life as it was, lo, those many years ago.”
And it was then that I should have remembered: every time I try to get cute and use the word “lo,” nothing good comes of it.
Anyone who has had COVID has told me…
[By the way, are we supposed to capitalize that? What’s the prevailing stylebook? Why am I stalling to come up with my next thought? The capital of Ohio is Columbus…]

Anyone who has had COVID has told me, “you really don’t want this. I was miserable.” And I would nod sympathetically. But now, I’m a believer. It stinks, and most of this past Monday through today has been a blur. And I’m really not trying to make light of it. I have lost loved ones to this terrible affliction, and I know that it has horribly affected so many of you as well.
Some have asked, “So, do you think that you got it at the wedding?“
Well, circumstantially, I guess… maybe? But, look, this has been a fairly unusual thing for the world, and even after two-plus years, we’re still figuring it all out. There’s no point in looking to blame others; I know this crowd and don’t think that it was anything more than bad luck.
I really appreciated the well wishes, good vibes, and technologically original suggestions from our good friends. On the orders of Chuck Small, who for reasons unknown has opted to become my CovidCounselor™, I have been ordered to “back it down” at least 50%. Like all good patients, I will listen to the advice of the medical professionals and therefore stop for today – we’ll skip the usual week’s wrap-up.

I’m hoping I won’t have to take my own advice (in terms of COVID recovery), as I’ll be traveling out of state and attending a birthday party (my mom’s 80th) next week. All we can do is try our best to be safe and hope for the best.

Good to have you back mt. Happy Independence/ Canada day folks. Work as normal for me on Monday. Saw a mention of July 4th on tv this morning and my daughter was complaining that its not a holiday weekend for us and how come the US gets to celebrate independence? Well dear, to cut a long story short, we’re the bad guys in this historical tale and never mind moaning that you have to go to school Monday, its only a month since we got two extra days holiday for Queen Liz’s longevity.
Been catching up on Glastonbury coverage. Watching Paul MCartney brought back memories of last time he headlined in 2004 as I was there that night. Amazing show. His voice might not be what it was but he’s 80 so I’ll give the guy a break, still put on a hell of a show and the surprise appearances of Bruce and Dave made it even more special. Elbow performing One Day Like This as the sun starts to set and the crowd singing along is a thing of beauty.
This weekend its sports all the way. Wimbledon, Tour de France and cricket to watch. Not enough time in the day.

I, too, marveled at how Paul’s performance dominated. He’s a gift that we’re lucky to still have.
The Bruce guest spot was great, and the Dave appearance showed an un-spoken wistfulness. It’s easy to see the admiration in Grohl’s eyes. I’d not be surprised if, among the many thoughts roiling in his head during “Band On The Run,” was: “I do not believe that I am standing here.”
Perhaps it’s partially due to everybody wanting a post-pandemic redemption, but it seems that the 2022 Glastonbury performances are being lauded as among the best in the festival’s history. I’d have to do my homework on past shows for a proper comparison. But from what I’ve seen so far, it’s really is great and well performed music by artists who are giving it their all.
I think that the fact its the first Glastonbury since 2019 and the times we’re living in with Covid, Ukraine and everything else means that its a focus for release and respite from all that. A chance to revel in the joyful things in life. I’ve been to 5 Glastonbury’s and been to plenty other festivals but there is something about Glastonbury that sets it apart. The scale is something to behold and the good vibes are infectious.
Been there for 5 days of hot, dry weather and for 5 days of rain and mud but nothing can keep the spirits down.
A couple of examples of the Glastonbury spirit. Looking after the land is a big thing, its held on Michael Eavis’ farm and the cows like to get their fields back in good condition. Compared to other festivals people are generally responsible and make use of the glut of bins provided but there will always be litter accumulated over the course of the day. In the early hours of the morning a team of volunteers pick up all of the litter so festival goers wake up each day to a pristine clean site. Even during the mud year. Pristine might not be the right word for that year but even amongst the thick oozing mud the debris of the previous day was cleared up.
One year I attended a couple in our group lost their car keys. On a massive site covering 900 acres the chances of ever seeing their keys again seemed minimal but (after a tense argument between the not so happy couple over whose fault it was) they went to lost property and lo and behold, the keys had been handed in and were already there waiting for them.

Here we are, one year closer to your big 250!!! And they all said you wouldn’t last. You’ve shown them, haven’t you?! Sure, you’ve made mistakes along the way, but you do always seem to make a determined effort to attend to and improve upon them. There’s alot to be said for always trying to be better.
It’s tough, I know, when you’ve outlived your parents. I’m sure they would be proud of you, you’ve taken their ideals for how a democracy should be for all people and strive to make it better, every day. Why else would people literally feel it’s a life or death ultimatum to travel vast distances over deserts and oceans to live with you? Because for people who just want to be themselves and provide for their family, the US is the apex. The American Dream is what it is for good reason.
Keep up the good work, old gal. I know, folks could use some regular breathing exercises to keep their passions in check, but I for one fully acknowledge it’s only because of you that they’re able to vent that anger in the first place.
You’re so patient with us. 🙂
