Welcome To The 2023 tnocs.com Year-End Review… Part Two…

Hello, Everybody!

Goodboy, here, reporting live for the Year-End Celebration! Joining me is my colleague…”

“Uh, Gary? You look, um… what’s the word…”

“I believe the term you seek is: ‘glowed-up.'”

“Well, we sure can’t argue with that! Lookin’ good! So, is this perhaps a permanent change?”

“Maybe just for today. I’m sort of proving a point. Just in case a certain someone is tuning in.”

“Ooh! Spill it! Is it a new potential significant other? Do tell! ”

“Not in the least. It’s a long story. I’ll tell you about it at midnight. In the meantime, let’s tell the good folks of tnocs village what we’ve been up to.”

“Absolutely! We’ve been working all week, and are proud to present the tnocs.com 2023 Year-End Review!”

Here are just a few randomly selected highlights from the over 350 articles written by our beloved Contributing Authors in 2023.

Be sure to post your favorite article and comment-section memories in the comments below!

January

We went down a musical memory lane…

Enjoyed a fun article about the great days of AM radio station contests…

I love how each contributor to the site brings some special knowledge or understanding, not just to music, but other areas of the arts (Dance, novels, movies etc.) And it’s the gift of sharing – not to show off, but to give each of us a different perspective of the subject.Dance Fever

February

The month had a lovely piece about a new family addition…

A debut music-charts article from an old friend…

And a look into the world of of a working musician.

March

A tribute to a one-hit wonder…

A sincere appreciation of The Cocteau Twins…

The Season Finale of a beloved series

Y estábamos todos en la Radio Mexicana, con nuestra muy querida amiga

My few contributions in the year were based on my road down to memory lane, and finding out that not all of the things I remember were bad (speaking about 1993 and MTV Latino…) Talking about my radio days took me back to my childhood and adolescence. – Edith G

April

A homage to a home-away-from home…

A hillarious look at strange song titles

An author’s debut article about a favorite genre…

And the debut of the legendary Friday Flash Review Series…

Thank you for providing a vehicle and a platform for me to explore my reviewing chops in a deeper way that I’m able to in our community’s germinating petri dish: the comments section of the The Number Ones column on Stereogum.com.Jon Deutsch

May

A nostalgic look at classic TV…

A fascinating look at a unique musical genre…

An author’s journey of faith and music…

And a hilarious debut from an old pal…

While part of the enjoyment of writing for this wide-ranging and entertaining site is coming up with an idea that fits with the overall vibe, much more pleasure comes from reading everybody else’s diverse takes on whatever moves them to take up a keyboard and share their experiences/opinions/knowledge.Stobgopper

June

A month that included a brilliant, critical film commentary…

Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” is probably going to be one of the last movies my teenage daughter will allow me to suggest we see together.

So it meant a lot to me when cappiethedog wrote a thoughtful review of it on tnocs.  Just one of many ways I connected in a meaningful way on this great site. – rollerboogie

A “dreamy” piece about celebs…

It’s been a pleasure to be part of tnocs. Its been a constant learning experience for this limey into American culture and music acts I never knew existed. Hopefully I’ve passed on the same to you all whether its the madness of the early Bee Gees or encouraged you to try a Spotted Dick. JJ Live At Leeds

July

I have always loved writing, but haven’t had a place where I could express myself and people actually not only read it but responded.  tnocs.com is one of the nicest things to happen to me in a long time and I can never be sufficiently grateful enough for the opportunity and wonderful support and encouragement I have gotten from mt, our fearless webmaster, and this community of wonderful music-obsessives.  rollerboogie

August

An original and thought provoking piece…

I’d say first and foremost, tnocs is a great place for your right wing dictatorial pretensions to go to die. Give us your hate-spewing manifestos and we’ll live laugh love you right out of the room.

Every article I’ve ever written (or contest I’ve fostered) for tnocs has been me scratching some itch I’ve had… no pretensions toward anything greater. Just a chance to write about something I enjoy. And it can be a lot more than just music; an article I remember well was on mushroom supplements, which Mrs Pauly and I now occasionally use after reading that article.

The best thing though about writing for tnocs is the troll to normal human ratio is asymptotically approaching zero. Your article will get more support, love and conversation here, with minimal heckling (unless of a good-spirited nature). It’s the best place to break out of your shell and give to a community of supportive folks. Pauly Steyreen

The continuation of a terrifically researched series…

And a debut author time-trip to 100 years ago…

Writing the Sounds Of 1923 series for TNOCS – whilst researching “From Thomas Edison to Duke Ellington”, the first volume of my upcoming book series on the history of pop music – has been an endlessly fascinating experience, not the least because I have found myself obsessed with an era of popular culture I never would have expected to have become obsessed with! Who knew that the kids of the 1920s were members of such sub-cultures as Cake Eaters, Dollar Johns, 2 cent Wills, Rug Hoppers and Cork Smellers? Not I !!DJ Professor Dan

September

The second chapter in a series about singing

Only here would you find such silly fun as this…

The start of a delightfully fun mini series about the “runners-up…”

And another fascinating visit to the world of eclectic art.

“Learning about avant garde art really öhrtm mùhl vuzza VOLP! and klartiifryst to a shy bald goose.” Phylum Of Alexandria

October

It was a month of centenarian celebration…

I love having an outlet to write about things I feel passionate about. Where else could I stir up a conversation about Bert Kaempfert on his 100th birthday? Link Crawford

And the most commented article of 2023…

My favorite part of my article with the alphabetized list of concerts that I have attended was the tremendous response in the comments. I had so much fun comparing lists, making notes for future concerts, and sharing memories with so many other live music lovers.lovethisconcept

November

We had a look at The Fab Four’s swan song…

I never thought that I’d write about a video by a twentysomething British YouTuber offering a cogent and entertaining analysis about Elvis Presley’s movie career. But it compelled me to do so and brought some good discussion in the comments section. Ozmoe

tnocs has been a place that offered me a chance to give back to the community that has enriched my musical knowledge beyond any expectations I had for a commenting group! – thegue

December

Wonderful recap! I’m making my 2023 autobiographical mixtape at this very moment. Spoiler alert: Beach Bunny will have multiple songs featured!

Good stuff, we have two artists (Yaeji and Men I Trust) in common but no songs.

I’ve been busy getting various and sundry activities off my plate before the end of 2023 and thankfully almost all of them have been done. With that relatively clean slate for me, I’m now able to focus on cranking out a few more posts for 2024. So look for them in the coming months and until then, Happy New Year one and all!

350 articles? Well done everyone on a productive 2023 and a round of applause to mt for putting it all together day in day out.

Our traditional New Year’s Eve here; baking done ready for tomorrow, takeaway about to arrive, beer is chilling in the fridge and it’s time to settle in for our movie marathon where we each pick a movie to take us past midnight. For tonight’s viewing pleasure a triple bill of The Goonies, Scott Pilgrim Vs The World and The Lost City.

Happy New year everyone!

Wow. My goodness everyone, give yourself a round of applause for a fantastic and busy 2023!

Goodboy and Gary, y’all are looking quite dapper on this festive occasion. Especially Gary; those headphones from Goodboy give him quite the Ariana Grande vibe.

I am hoping maybe The Big M (Menopause) loosens it grip on me in 2024 and I actually get some incentive to write again; shoot, I’d just like to have incentive to do anything again. 😄

I am so, so grateful to all of you regular contributors for all the entertainment and education this year. I love how it’s total potluck what might appear that day, and I love how I always enjoy the read.

And as always, my hats off to you, Good Sir mt, for your tireless efforts in keeping this place hoppin’. Your fun graphical Easter Eggs, introducing new features to the site, I have no idea how you continue to find the time to keep the place so top notch, but thank goodness you do. 🤗

Happy New Year, tnocs friends! Here’s to more fun in 2024. 🥳

Happy New Year, TNOCS! Waiting for the ball to drop, and enjoying a little closed captioning misfire (at least I assume those aren’t the actual lyrics)…

Ha! That reads like I was typing the closed captioning. Only if it was me I’d have gone all “Porky McPork Pork”

(Isn’t it fascinating in this day and age voice to script programs still aren’t bilingual?!)

Well, I got curious and looked it up, and I stand corrected… Song is “Perreo Porky”, so it’s not just a misheard “porque”. The English translation of the full song is, um, interesting.

Happy New Year, TNOCS. And T’Pau, wherever you are. I love “Heart and Soul”. Also, Leonard Nimoy in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

Simultaneous wars, oh, never mind. Let’s make Oahu sound like a war zone. Absolutely no self-awareness. Whatever neighborhood you’re in, it’s the same thing: Illegal aerials.
